How to pick a garage door lock
YOUR GARAGE DOOR COULD BE YOUR LARGEST RESPONSIBILITY
Quite often, gate owners have problems with leaving (entering) the garage or yard, which are associated with a temporary power outage or a malfunction of the automation installed on the garage door. As a result, you can be late for work, important negotiations or the airport. Just for this case, manufacturers of automation and garage door designers have provided emergency unlocking and systems to unlock garage doors.
On different types of garage doors, the design of the mechanisms is different, but they all have one thing in common, they are needed to quickly and safely open the garage door from outside by hand.
With all the advantages that a gate with an electric drive have, there is one drawback in them – the impossibility of functioning in the absence of electricity. If this situation suddenly happens to you, knowing the essential actions will help in resolving the issue.
Unlockers for drives are included in the set for each automation system. Their principle of operation differs depending on the model of the garage door and the manufacturer, but in general the mechanism is quite simple.
If you want to open swing gates, this will not cause any special problems: you only need to unlock each of the leaf drives using a special key. There will also be no issues with further operation: the garage doors will unclose and close as usual, not equipped with automatic equipment, until the power is restored.
Correspondingly, with the help of the unlocking key, the sliding gates could also be forced to open. After you walk into the garage, you will have to lock them manually.
WAYS TO BREAK INTO YOUR GARAGE DOOR FROM OUTSIDE
You should put on the cord on the operator to unlock the garage door. It removes the mechanical blocking and the door can be opened / closed manually. You should make sure that there are no people or foreign objects under the door leaf. An incorrectly installed gate can break and fall off.
You just have to slide the hanger through the top of the garage door until you get the emergency latch. After that hook on the cord and slowly pull on it to release the fuse. You may now slide the door by hand.
You may also use hooked wire to unlock the door, if you don’t have a hanger on hand, just be convinced it’s tough enough to operate the job.
PICKING THE LOCK ON THE GARAGE DOOR
If you have the needed instruments and an outside handle garage door, you can lightly unlock the garage door lock (if you don’t install a garage door lock, specify). These are usually cheap locks that are easy to evade.
All you need is a diamond pickaxe and an L-shaped key, just place the L-shaped key on the underside of the striker. Attach a diamond bumper to the top of the hole and raise the toggle switches in the lock until you can turn and unblock the lock.
TO LOCK THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE
To close the sliding door from the outside, the locking handle must be mounted so that the rod is inserted into the square hole next to the operating lever.
After installation, rotate the handle 90 degrees to lock the valve in place. This will rotate the control lever and extend the latch to the locked position. The garage door is now locked.
ANNOTATION. The outside handle alone cannot unlock the side lock. The bolt is now locked with the release lever. The lock cannot be unlocked from the outside without adding a lock cylinder to activate the release lever.
If your garage door is equipped with a rack-and-pinion overhead electric drive, the emergency unlocking of the sectional garage doors the unlocking mechanism is located on a movable carriage located on the rail. As a rule, it is a hanging cord (one or two, depending on the automation model) or a swing arm directly on the carriage.
Boldly but gently pull the cord or turn the lever at the same time raising or lowering the gate by the handle from the inside. After a characteristic click, which means that the carriage is detached from the rail, the gate can be easily moved by hand. But keep in mind if, after closing or opening the web, the carriage comes to the same place where you unlocked it, then everything will be locked again with the same loud click and the procedure will need to be repeated to unlock it again.
WAYS TO KEEP BURGLARS AWAY FROM YOUR GARAGE
Before deciding to open the garage door by yourself, you need to assess the problem and consider all alternative options for entering non-residential premises. There can be quite a lot of such methods, so we will consider them further:
USE A ZIP TIE TO SECURE THE EMERGENCY RELEASE
You have found out how light it is to operate an emergency garage lock with a wire hook or a hanger. You mau use a little zipper through the openings in the release lever and into the other hole that the door opens through. This creates resistance but lets you use the kill switch in an emergency.
INSTALL A DOOR DEVIL ON THE GARAGE DOORS
When you’re ready to outlay the money, you can buy a Door Devil or a resembling product to protect your garage side door from burglary. The Door Devil is screwed into the floor and hinders burglars from coming in through the garage door.
INSTALL AUTOMATIC DEADBOLTS TO LOCK THE DOOR
While it can cost a lot, it will keep your garage door secure. Garage door bolts make your door more secure and harder to unlock from the outside.
If, for one reason or another, you may not install the standard mechanism, the key is lost or the mechanism is faulty, then simply disconnect the drive rod from the gate leaf. This is usually done with a spanner key on “13” and will take just a couple of minutes. But also, as in the case of sliding doors, in the future, it is still better to deal with the malfunction and safely use the standard unlocker system.
Also, the swing gate automation can be installed with a backup battery and, in the event of a power outage, continue to use the door.
WRAPPING THINGS UP
Unfortunately, in most cases, the appearance of sectional doors may still suffer and a patch will have to be put in place of the hole. Many garage owners, once faced with the problem of a power outage and the difficulty of “breaking” a sectional structure, decide to install a bolt lock with unlocking: the lifting and restoration of the canvas is laborious enough.
In this article, we examined the standard and “non-standard” options for unlocking the most common types of automatic gates. We hope the information received will help you to avoid negative consequences and expensive repairs during the operation of the gate.
